CHAPTER FOURTEEN

THEO

I pace the floor of our home, my anxiety growing with each passing moment. The weight of anticipation is almost suffocating, and I can't help but feel a mixture of fear and helplessness as I await the return of Rose and our friends. This competition, the trials they've been facing—I can't shake the feeling that it's something more sinister than it seems.

The door creaks open, and my heart leaps into my throat as they finally arrive. But the moment I see their faces, my relief is immediately replaced by a cold dread. They look ... haunted, as if they've just emerged from the darkest corners of their own nightmares. Their eyes are hollow, their once vibrant expressions now etched with pain and fear.

Rose doesn't say a word, her gaze meeting mine with an intensity that steals my breath. I can see the turmoil behind her eyes, and the need for solace, for the warmth of our embrace. I close the distance between us, enfolding her in my arms as she clings to me, her body trembling with unspoken emotion.

Mekhi, Kieran, and Jax gather around us, their gazes reflecting the shared ordeal they've just endured. Each of them seems lost, adrift in a sea of torment, and it breaks my heart to see them like this. We stand together, a collective anchor in the storm, trying to support one another against the crushing weight of our shared pain.

I want to ask what happened, to understand the source of their anguish, but I can't bring myself to break the silence. The weight of their unspeakable experiences seems too heavy, too fragile to be disturbed by my probing questions. Instead, I simply provide a comforting presence, an unwavering foundation for them to lean on, as we navigate the shadows of the unknown darkness that has consumed them all.

Carefully, I release my hold on Rose and glance over at Bennett and Kieran, who are leaning against each other for support. Their exhaustion is palpable, and I can see the weight of their experiences written all over their faces. I nod to them, acknowledging the bond we share as family, as friends, and offer my help.

With slow, deliberate movements, I guide Bennett and Kieran through the house towards the caves where their bedrooms are nestled. They lean on me, and I provide a steady shoulder for them to rest on as we navigate the dimly lit halls. There's a sense of unity in our silence, the unspoken understanding that we are here for one another, no matter how dark or heavy the burden may be.

Once we reach the caves, I help Bennett and Kieran into their respective rooms, making sure they're comfortable and safe before leaving them to rest. I feel a deep sense of responsibility for their well-being, knowing that they, like Rose and our other mates, have been through something that has shaken them to their very core.

With Bennett and Kieran safely settled, I make my way back to Rose, Deakan, and Jax.
